U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards has announced the approval of a $6 million loan guarantee by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development for a housing project in Haywood County. This decision follows Edwards’ advocacy for Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc.’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery application.

The project, named “Balsam Edge Apartments,” aims to increase affordable housing options in rural Western North Carolina. Edwards supported the initiative by writing a letter to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development backing Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc.’s grant application.

“More affordable housing options are much needed in North Carolina’s 11th District, especially after Hurricane Helene has devastated homes in our mountains,” stated Edwards. “This award is an important investment in our communities and will tangibly help citizens who were displaced by the storm or just in need of affordable housing amid surging housing costs.”

Edwards expressed confidence in Mountain Housing Opportunities, citing their track record of developing quality, affordable housing across Western North Carolina. He anticipates that this development will benefit citizens in Haywood County.

The funding will support the construction of Balsam Edge, a family and multi-family housing complex located in Waynesville, N.C., which will feature 22 one-bedroom units, 42 two-bedroom units, and 20 three-bedroom units.
