Over the past ten days, mountain communities have demonstrated remarkable solidarity in response to Hurricane Helene. However, misinformation has also spread, causing confusion about the hurricane response efforts. Congressman Chuck Edwards addressed several myths circulating online.
Edwards clarified that “Hurricane Helene was NOT geoengineered by the government to seize and access lithium deposits in Chimney Rock.” Charles Konrad from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed that no technology exists to create or manipulate hurricanes.
Local officials have dismissed claims of government meetings to seize Chimney Rock or abandoning search and rescue efforts there. Rutherford County emergency services are actively searching for missing persons using cadaver dogs.
Rumors about FEMA stopping donations or diverting disaster funds were also debunked. Edwards stated, “FEMA does not conduct vehicle stops or handle road closures with armed guards,” and assured that disaster funding remains separate from border issues.
Concerns about FEMA running out of money were addressed as well. Edwards mentioned that FEMA has sufficient funds for immediate needs and emphasized ongoing efforts for supplemental disaster relief funding.
Regarding property rights, Edwards affirmed that applying for disaster assistance does not grant FEMA ownership of land. Additionally, airspace access for rescue operations is not restricted by the FAA or North Carolina Emergency Management.
Lastly, Edwards explained that the initial $750 provided by FEMA is a flexible payment for essential items while further assistance is assessed. He urged people to verify information from reputable sources rather than relying on social media platforms.
With these clarifications, Edwards aims to dispel misinformation and focus on recovery efforts in Western North Carolina.
