U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards, representing North Carolina’s 11th district, was accompanied by several House leaders in Western North Carolina to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. The group included House Majority Leader Steve Scalise from Louisiana, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith from Missouri, Congressman Mark Alford also from Missouri, and Congressman Mike Collins from Georgia.
The delegation toured areas affected by the hurricane, including the Veterans Restoration Quarters and River Arts District. This visit aimed to provide firsthand insight into the destruction caused by the hurricane as Edwards prepares to present a supplemental funding bill in November.
Congressman Edwards emphasized the importance of this visit for his colleagues: “Majority Leader Scalise, Chairman Smith and other Members of Congress’ visit to our mountains was an opportunity for them to see the damage caused by Hurricane Helene for themselves so that they can truly understand the devastation Western North Carolinians are experiencing. I wanted to make sure that House leaders and Members have firsthand knowledge of the hurricane destruction in preparation for when I go to present a supplemental funding bill on the House Floor in November.”
Majority Leader Scalise remarked on his observations: “Hurricane Helene had a devastating impact across western North Carolina. But I saw today in Asheville what I saw in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina: resilient people coming together in the face of destruction and tragedy to lend helping hands to their neighbors and rebuild their vibrant community.” He expressed gratitude for meeting volunteers working towards recovery efforts.
Chairman Smith shared his sentiments on witnessing the aftermath: “The flood damage in Western North Carolina is absolutely heartbreaking to see up close,” he said. He acknowledged Rep. Chuck Edwards’ role in facilitating their understanding of the disaster’s impact within his district.
This visit underscores ongoing efforts by congressional members to support recovery initiatives following natural disasters like Hurricane Helene.
