U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) has announced the recipient of the Congressional Award Bronze Medal for North Carolina’s 11th District. Sophie Van Arnam, a senior at Asheville High School, has been recognized for her outstanding achievements.

To earn the bronze medal, Sophie dedicated herself to completing 200 hours of service over seven months, with a focus on public volunteer service, personal development, physical fitness, and a two-day expedition. Edwards highlighted Sophie’s efforts, stating, “Sophie Van Arnam is NC-11’s first Congressional Award winner during my time in Congress. It is great to be able to present this award to a WNC student for the first time.”

Speaking further about Sophie’s accomplishments, Congressman Edwards praised her dedication and contributions to the community, saying, “Not only is her drive, discipline and commitment impressive, but Sophie has long contributed to our community through tutoring underserved youth and civic engagement. Attaining the Congressional Award is no easy feat, and the fact that she set high goals and achieved them makes it clear that Sophie’s future is bright.”

The Congressional Award, established by Congress in 1979, aims to recognize initiative, service, and achievement in young individuals. Participants like Sophie can earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Certificates, as well as Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals, with each level being cumulative. The program challenges participants to set personally challenging goals in voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration.
