U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) has released a report aimed at reforming the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and expediting recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. These recommendations have been submitted to the White House and the FEMA task force. Edwards was appointed to this task force by President Trump on January 24, 2025, tasked with accelerating recovery efforts following the natural disaster.
Communities in Western North Carolina continue rebuilding after Hurricane Helene’s devastating landfall on September 27, 2024. Edwards identified a need for FEMA reforms to enhance its efficiency for survivors and local governments, proposing improvements such as consistent communication and a localized approach to disaster management.
Edwards stated, “After a productive meeting with White House senior officials, I am pleased to share with folks invested in the recovery of Hurricane Helene the recommendations that I have provided to President Trump and the FEMA task force to help our mountain folk recover more quickly.”
“Typical disaster recovery options will not suffice,” Edwards emphasized. His recommendations focus on a Western North Carolina-centered strategy, acknowledging the unique circumstances of the region’s rebuilding process.
As work continues, Edwards expressed optimism, stating, “I’m confident that these recommendations will help our region gain momentum in recovery, and I look forward to continuing to work with President Trump and the FEMA task force in the next phase of the process, where we implement some of these recommendations.”
