Ninth Avenue School
The Ninth Avenue School opened its doors in 1951 as a consolidated school for the Black students of Henderson, Polk and Transylvania Counties and operated until 1965. The two-story, red-brick building served Black students during the era of segregation in Henderson County which continued many years beyond the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling that declared racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional. While disadvantaged in resources, the caring spirit of the staff and parents gave the students a family-like learning institution that pushed all to be their best. The principals were John Marable, Cedric Jones, William Gordon, J.R. Wright and Leon H. Anderson. Integration of the local public schools occurred in 1965, and the last commencement was held on May 27, 1965. The school building still stands facing Prince Street as part of Hendersonville Middle School.
