Orchard Valley Health and Rehabilitation was the second largest nursing home in Henderson County in the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) show.

The center had 134 beds, exceeding the Henderson County average by 33 beds for the same period. On average, Orchard Valley cared for 101.1 residents during the quarter.

Orchard Valley Health and Rehabilitation’s overall CMS rating was 1 out of 5, below the 2.9 average for North Carolina nursing homes.

Valley Hill Health & Rehab Center held the top spot in the county with 150 beds. In third place, Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation offered 130 beds during the same quarter.

As of the first quarter of 2026, Orchard Valley Health and Rehabilitation had accumulated $16,452 in fines and received one penalty.

There were eight for-profit nursing homes in Henderson County, North Carolina.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the population of older adults is expanding nationwide as fewer people are part of younger age groups. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, and the population under 18 declined by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population has risen sharply in the last century, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study estimates nearly half of this older age group, about 28 million individuals, may eventually require long-term services or support. Projections from the same report indicate that over a third of them could need nursing home care over time.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
