The North Carolina Republican Party's new advertisement says that Gov. Roy Cooper failed to protect residents living at nursing homes during COVID-19.
The ad released by the Republicans shows the number of elders in nursing homes and those in long-term care facilities who have died due to the coronavirus, the North Carolina Republican Party said in a July 28 news release announcing the advertising campaign.
The numbers show that of all coronavirus deaths, half come from at-risk populations in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, the North Carolina Republican Party said in the release.
The party said that Cooper also doesn't have a plan for regular coronavirus testing at these facilities.
“Gov. Cooper’s refusal to follow the science and data and develop a workable strategy to conduct surveillance testing of nursing home and long term care facilities disqualifies him from leadership,” state Republican Party Press Secretary Tim Wigginton said in the press release. “This ad campaign will help hold Cooper and Cohen accountable by laying out the facts he simply cannot dispute.”
Cooper is up for re-election in November. He is facing Republican challenger Dan Forest, who is the state's lieutenant governor.
