Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood, president of Blue Ridge Community College, has been named the 2022 Education Champion by the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce.
The Education Champion award was developed in 2001 by the Chamber’s Education Committee to recognize individuals who substantially impact local education efforts. Leatherwood’s accomplishment was announced at the Chamber’s annual dinner on Friday, March 25, by Mr. Graham Fields, Education Committee chair and Assistant to the President at AdventHealth Hendersonville.
Dr. Leatherwood has served in higher education administration for 23 years and at Blue Ridge Community College since 2017. Under her leadership, the College builds strategic partnerships with area schools, businesses, and economic development organizations to build a pipeline of skilled professions in Henderson and Transylvania counties.
Through Blue Ridge, Leatherwood partnered with community organizations to recruit seven companies to Henderson County. She spearheaded ongoing campus improvement construction projects to modernize the student learning experience. She expanded the College’s health care offerings to meet local employer demand, and she secured funding – including a recent $2M anonymous donation – for Blue Ridge’s Brighter Futures “Free College” scholarship program.
