Our natural resources students have been busy learning about the American Chestnut tree and how the blight impacted the tree and the people of the Appalachian mountains. This project isn’t directly from our curriculum but has ties to the standard course of study but even stronger are the ties to the heritage of our students and the town of Rosman.
Students spend a few days doing research with our media specialist learning about the chestnut tree and the blight’s impact. Then they write the story of the American Chestnut. The narration is then recorded and the students do some basic coding with the Makey Makey. The Makey Makey is then connected to our cross sections of wood and the buttons are screws to play short clips of their recorded story. It’s pretty amazing and works great for a project like this. So thankful to Sarah Justice for her work and direction with this project.
