On Saturday, Aug. 17, U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) will host a Military Service Academy Day for high school students in North Carolina’s 11th District. The event is scheduled from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Haywood Community College, Hemlock Lobby, located at 185 Freedlander Dr., Clyde, NC.
Military Service Academy Day provides an opportunity for Western North Carolina high school students and their parents to interact with representatives from the military service academies. Attendees can inquire about the admissions process and life at the academies. Members of Edwards’ district office will also be present to address questions regarding the nomination process.
The five service academies include the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), the United States Naval Academy (USNA), the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA), the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), and the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA). Nominations are required for all academies except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which admits students based on an annual nationwide competition.
Edwards stated, "One of my most solemn responsibilities as the representative for North Carolina’s 11th District is selecting nominees for our nation’s military service academies. The men and women who are nominated and ultimately selected to attend one of these five prestigious academies represent the very best of leadership, service, patriotism and dedication that our nation has to offer. I look forward to meeting WNC high school students at Military Service Academy Day who are interested in learning more about serving our great nation."
