U.S. Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) announced that the Department of Justice has awarded $100,000 to the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office. The grant award follows Edwards’ project funding request for fiscal year 2024.

This grant will provide funding for the Yancey County Sheriff's Office to acquire portable substance analyzer capability, which will enhance officer safety in the field and provide a cost-efficient method of identifying potentially deadly substances, such as fentanyl.

Edwards stated, “WNC law enforcement officers risk their lives to protect our citizens and communities, and it is critical that they have the tools to do their jobs safely and effectively. I’m pleased that other lawmakers have seen the merit in funding this project and as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ll continue to advocate for the necessary resources to keep Western North Carolinians and our neighborhoods safe in a fiscally responsible manner.”
