Valley Hill Health & Rehab Center emerged as the nursing home with the highest bed count in Henderson County during the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility offered 150 beds, putting it 49 above the Henderson County average for the same period, and provided care for an average of 82.7 residents.

The CMS awarded Valley Hill Health & Rehab Center an overall rating of 2 out of 5, underperforming compared to the North Carolina nursing home average rating of 2.9.

Orchard Valley Health and Rehabilitation was the county’s second largest with 134 beds, while Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation followed closely with 130 beds.

Through the first quarter of 2026, Valley Hill Health & Rehab Center had incurred three fines totaling $58,949 and received three penalties.

The county had eight for-profit nursing homes in North Carolina as of the reporting period.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that the older adult group continues to rise while the population of individuals under 18 declines. Between 2020 and 2024, there was a 13% increase in Americans aged 65 and up, while those under age 18 dropped by 1.7%. The nation’s older population has seen significant growth during the last century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study estimates almost half of older adults—approximately 28 million—could need some form of long-term services or support. Furthermore, over one-third of them are expected to require nursing home care eventually.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
