4 Rescues in 8 Days! It has continued to be a busy week for the Transylvania County Rescue Squad. At approximately 1600 on Saturday the 28th the rescue squad was notified of a disoriented biker lost and injured high on the Black Mountain Trail. Squad members responded to the Pisgah Riding Sables with Truck 31, Rescue 37 + ATV Trailer 1, Rescue 35 + UTV 1. Teams climbed to Pressley Gap in the UTV and ATVs before continuing higher on foot. Crews appreciated that the recent re-routing of the Black Mountain Trail drains far better and is much easier to travel than the previous trail. Strong work by the U.S. Forest Service - National Forests in North Carolina, Pisgah Area SORBA , and Singletrack Trails. Crews reached the subject 1.75 miles up the trail shortly after sunset and provided warm layers and sustenance. After assessment and treatment of their injuries the patient was escorted back down the trail to the waiting UTVs.
The heated enclosed UTV cab proved invaluable to warm and shelter the subject on the ride down as temperatures continued to drop in the dark. All responders were out of the woods by 2000 and the subject was returned to their loved ones. It is very much winter up high with cold temperatures and early sunsets. If exploring in Pisgah bring extra warm layers and a source of light.
