In an effort to reduce the number of missed court dates, a new program is being started at Buncombe County Court.
Right inside the entrance, people will now find an information booth with personnel to help people navigate the courthouse buildings, and thus assist with the various needs and services the court provides.
"Our court orientation program, known as the Court Navigator Program, has had the opportunity to serve over 125 people by helping them find their courtroom, also connecting them to other resources and helping to enroll people in the court reminder system," said Josh Pierce, manager of Diversion Services.
The program is funded by a $60,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation, which supports programs related to justice and accessibility. Goodwill Industries is also a sponsor which has helped provide a bilingual contractor employee for these services..
The program also has a system where people can sign up for automated text messages and help them stay informed of when they need to go to court.
