Edwards highlighted the disparity in the burden placed on the working class, stating, "Mr. Secretary, one of the things that I continually hear from folks in my district and from all around America is that Washington seems to have forgotten so much of the working class." He questioned the rationale behind asking individuals with manual labor jobs to finance the college education of others who may come from more privileged backgrounds.
The Congressman further pressed Secretary Cardona to justify the fairness of the debt relief program, emphasizing the challenges faced by individuals in labor-intensive professions. "Tell the bricklayers and pipe fitters out there right now, you have the floor for a minute and three seconds, why they should feel good about paying for these student debt relief programs," Edwards demanded.
Expressing his discontent with the lack of equity in the proposed program, Edwards pointed out the perceived injustice of expecting one class of individuals to fund the education of another. "The parents of those children that are laying bricks and fitting pipes have already made their decision, they're into their career and they're being asked to pay for a different class of folks' education," he stated.
